Liposuction surgery

Do you want a firmer, more sculpted version of yourself? Have you been dieting and exercising for what seems like forever, but not getting the results you desire? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Liposuction is an ideal procedure for San Francisco men and women who are fit and trim but still have stubborn fat deposits. This surgery, which is often considered “magical” by its patients, can remove these fat cells for good, providing patients with the more sculpted physique and silhouette they’ve been trying to naturally achieve for years.

San Francisco men and women become frustrated when they are unable to lose fat in certain areas of the body despite watching their food intake and vigorous exercise. The reason for this frustration is that the distribution of fat cells throughout the body is genetically determined and cannot be changed with diet and exercise. The only way to get rid of these extra fat cells is with the use of liposuction surgery.* That’s where Dr. Kaplan and his experience with liposuction comes in!

Dr. Kaplan uses the latest liposuction techniques to promote fast healing and limit undesirable side effects of the liposuction procedure. If you are considering a liposuction procedure in the San Francisco area, Dr. Kaplan will make sure you receive the comfort and care you deserve. Currently, among the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the Bay Area, liposuction sculpts the body by reducing undesirable fat from stubborn problem areas that just won’t go away no matter how much a patient diets or exercises. Women typically choose to have liposuction surgery below the chin, on the hips, thighs, waist, the abdomen, and areas around the breasts. Men who choose liposuction usually reduce fat deposits under the chin or around the waist, and in some cases reduce the appearance of “male breasts,” a condition known as gynecomastia.

Can I get liposuction instead of dieting and exercising?

Liposuction is not intended as a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise; rather, it supplements these. It is also not a weight loss surgery. In order to be a qualified candidate for liposuction by Dr. Kaplan, you should be at or near your ideal body weight, with a few areas of fat that haven’t responded to your diet and exercise regimen.

Am I a good candidate for this surgery?

In addition to being close to your goal weight, ideal liposuction candidates are:

  • In good overall health.
  • Have listened to Dr. Kaplan explain the surgery and expected results and have communicated to him that they have realistic expectations for the procedure.
  • Are non-smokers, as smoking can negatively impact both the surgery and recovery process.
  • Are in good psychological health.

How is liposuction surgery performed?

Liposuction surgery begins with a small incision near to the area to be treated. Next, a thin, hollow cannula, or tube, which is attached to a powerful suction pump is inserted into the incision, and fat cells are gently removed. Dr. Kaplan plans his approach carefully: incisions are kept minimal and a great deal of time is spent planning the procedure to ensure the best possible results and a better sculpted you! Liposuction can be performed in a hospital or Dr. Kaplan’s accredited plastic surgery suite in San Francisco.

Many of Dr. Kaplan’s San Francisco liposuction patients have never had any surgery performed before or undergone anesthesia. The proper anesthesia amounts and types vary between liposuction procedures. You will work with Dr. Kaplan to determine the right type of anesthesia to maximize your safety and comfort during your liposuction surgery. If a small area of fat deposits will be removed, a local anesthetic is administered to the affected area. Local anesthesia can be coupled with light intravenous sedation to increase your comfort during the procedure. For more extensive liposuction procedures, regional or general anesthesia is usually preferred so that you are completely asleep and unaware of the procedure as it is taking place.

It is also very important to realize that the final result is also determined by the condition of the patient’s skin. Dr. Kaplan’s liposuction surgery will reduce the extra fat, but the San Francisco patient’s body must shrink the skin down to reveal the new body that was just created. If the patient’s skin does not shrink then other options would be considered, including the surgical removal of the extra skin, such as with a lower body lift or tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). This is very important to discuss in the consultation with Dr. Kaplan.

Common side effects associated with this surgery include temporary bruising, numbness, and soreness, but these effects generally subside within a week or two.* Once the area has healed and swelling has subsided, the patient typically notices a firmer, tighter physique.*
