Things are good. The baby is seven weeks old now.

Getting enough sleep?

Greg Sherrell:
Funny you mentioned the baby, because I was going to ask you about that. I was complaining to you in another video about the bags under my eyes. I wasn’t getting enough sleep. But, are you getting enough sleep? And, how do you prepare for surgery the night before? I think a lot of people might want to know. How do you get prepped and ready to go? Because it’s almost like you’re playing a football game. This is your big day.

Dr. Jonathan Kaplan:
That’s right. Yeah, you definitely don’t want patients thinking that you’re too tired the morning of their surgery. They really want you to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. They know you have a life and everything. But that’s the thing, it’s kind of interesting with social media that we choose to put things out on social media about our lives, Kelsey and I. @KelseyKaplanFashion on Instagram by the way.

Residency training prepared Dr. Bae

Dr. Jonathan Kaplan:
Or they’re also watching me @RealDrBae, R-E-A-L-D-R-B-A-E. Anyway, so they see that we have a baby. They see that we’re out walking. And they see we’re go out to dinner or something. And Kelsey’s taking pictures and food, which I still don’t really get. But, we definitely letting it out there that we have a child. And so, people know with a new baby, they typically don’t sleep very well. They might sleep two to three hours stretches at a time. So, you can’t hide that fact. When you come in the morning of surgery, you’ve got to be on point, ready to go. Because even though it may be the umpteenth operation you’ve done on that particular operation, it’s the patient’s first time doing it and they need to feel secure.

&Nbsp;

So it’s not as big of a deal as people think. Yes, the baby does wake us up. Yes, I get up and change a diaper and things like that. But I got all this training during my general surgery residency. When you would take call, you’d be at the hospital all night, and you would get woken up for trauma or emergencies, and you’d have to run downstairs to the emergency room and take care of something. And you would take care of things. It might take a few hours to take care of that thing. And then, you would just run back up to your call room. And with the training, you would fall asleep immediately. You wouldn’t [crosstalk 00:02:07]-

Greg Sherrell:
I bet everybody wishes we had that gift, especially during this COVID angst people have. They wake up, they can’t go back to sleep.

Dr. Jonathan Kaplan:
Right.

Greg Sherrell:
So, we all need that training.

Dr. Jonathan Kaplan:
Yeah. You start playing on your phone and all that stuff. But that was the beauty of surgery residency is that you would sleep when you can. I know people say sleep when the baby sleeps, but I don’t think that’s actually a good idea, because then you’re always sleeping because the babies are sleeping. And then, you’re just depressed because you’re not getting anything accomplished with your own life. But anyway, so whenever you had the opportunity in surgery residency, yes, you would do something. It might be something really intense. You just dealt with a gunshot wound or something. You had to cross-clamp something in somebody, a blood vessel in somebody.

But after you took care of business, you went back to your call room, you fell asleep immediately. And so, that’s what’s going on now is I don’t even have to be up that long anymore. So I wake up, I change a diaper, I can fall right back to sleep. Unfortunately, Kelsey has to breastfeed. So that’s why I do feel very comfortable, very well rested, when I come in the next morning to see a patient for surgery. Because, yes, it might’ve been interrupted sleep, but the hours added up to about six or seven hours ultimately. So, I’m in good shape and I’m able to reassure them of that as well.

Attending a Beyonce concert the night before surgery?!

Greg Sherrell:
Perfect. And now, I don’t want to see you at a Beyonce concert the night before my next surgery, Dr. Bae, okay?

Dr. Jonathan Kaplan:
I promise you, you will not see me at a Beyonce concert the night before your operation.

Greg Sherrell:
Well, and there’s no concerts right now, so we don’t have to worry about that. We know you’re locked in the house like the rest of us, so you’ll be tucked away. I feel safe there, me too.

Dr. Jonathan Kaplan:
Yeah, I’ll be at the Lady Gaga concert, just FYI.

Greg Sherrell:
Awesome. Well, we both love her, I’ll see you there. All right, thanks Dr. Bae.

Cosmetic Surgery and social media

Many plastic surgeons and doctors performing procedures in their own office or surgery center are showcasing procedures on social media. It’s very conducive to cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics as well. Pretty much any procedure that is elective (not an emergency) is ripe for social media.

The consumers out there on social media will be able to learn more about the procedure they may be considering. Also, they get a good look at the doctor. For example, what’s more genuine, the description the doctor’s bio provides on their website or seeing your doctor on screen in the midst of performing a procedure?

The video below also discusses what it takes to become a plastic surgeon. It’s a long road. The beauty of a career in plastic surgery is that you can often avoid the headaches of dealing with insurance companies. Or using an electronic medical record made for everyone but optimized for no one. Or waiting forever for an operating room in a hospital vs having your own operating room in your office and waiting on no one!

Being in a private cosmetic practice can allow practicing medicine with all of the pluses and none of the minuses associated with most fields in healthcare.

Lastly, the video gives insight into the impact cosmetic surgery can have on a patient. It’s immediate and hopefully, with the right expectations, a positive impact.

Presentation topics at Miami Cosmetic Surgery

While Dr. Kaplan will be speaking on several topics that relate to BuildMyBod Health, his first presentation on Thursday morning is actually related to his day job as a plastic surgeon!

On Thursday, February 20th, he’ll discuss the technique he created, the Single Incision Minimally Invasive (SIMI) neck lift. This is a procedure that reduces the typical number of neck lift incisions from three to one. Most importantly, the two incisions eliminated in this procedure are the two longest and most unsightly. The World Association of Gluteal Surgeons (WAGS)

As a reminder, the Brazilian Butt Lift is the harvesting of fat from the patient’s abdomen, flanks and back and injection of the fat into the buttocks. There is a much discussed risk of accidentally injecting fat too deep into the buttocks. If that occurs, the fat could enter the pelvic blood vessels and embolize (travel) to the heart and result in death. A fat embolism is similar to a pulmonary embolism (blood clot from the veins in the legs), except that in the former, fat travels to the heart and in the latter, a blood clot travels to the heart.

While obviously death from a fat embolism in the case of a BBL is tragic, this is the exception. Injecting superficially with the protection of the underlying sacrum, will be a major teaching point during the conference.

Becker’s ASC 2019 Price Transparency Panel

The price transparency panel will include ASC administrators and doctors that believe in price transparency. Panel members will discuss how price transparency has been a benefit to their practice or facility. However, the other panel members showcase price transparency with a menu of procedures and their prices.

This provides no lead generation and no way for the facility to follow up with the consumer to provide more education. This is the critical piece missing in the price transparency debate. If you provide consumers with information that is broad, vague and inactionable, it’s no different than providing them with no information at all. Best Surgical Body Shaping Enhancement at THE Aesthetic Show 2019

As you can see in the video below, Dr. Kaplan performed a Mommy Makeover on a patient with amazing results. In fact, award winning results! She had a breast augmentation and lift as well as a tummy tuck.

Even though it’s a scary sounding operation, the patient when home the same day as surgery. She was a very compliant, active patient who recovered well.

There are many variations on the mommy makeover. No two patients are alike. Some need a breast lift alone, or implants alone, or implants and a lift. This all depends on how droopy the breast are and how much breast tissue the patient already has.

If they have a large amount of breast tissue, then they may only need a lift. The type of lift depends on how droopy the breast are. Minimal droop, an implant may be enough. More droop may need a donut lift, a lollipop lift or an anchor lift. Implants also help with improving breast projection even if the patient already has adequate breast tissue. This patient had a breast lift and augmentation. Check out the results below.
