Let’s say, for a moment, I care about 90 Day Fiancé or any of the “stars” of the show. If that’s the case, I have a small window of opportunity to weigh in on the latest news that Larissa Dos Santos Lima had $72,000 of plastic surgery to look like Kylie Jenner. But is that really true?

90 Day Fiancé spends big!

If you look at the “after” photos above, you’ll notice some similarities to Kylie. Larissa has big boobs and is curvy like Kylie now. But when it comes to really looking like Kylie from the facial perspective, she doesn’t. That’s not to say she looks bad. Not at all. Not here to body shame.

But if she’s putting all of this money towards looking like Kylie, it will be hard to have the same face as Kylie. Their underlying bone structure and head shape are different. Sure she had a rhinoplasty and I’m sure other fillers to the face. But that alone doesn’t make her look like Kylie. The dark hair and makeup do most of the heavy lifting on that front. Not saying there’s no similarity between the two women, but the similarities reflect similarities that women with an olive complexion and dark hair would have anyway.

Also, who said she’s trying to look like Kylie? When I read this article, it never clearly quotes Larissa herself that she wants to look like Kylie. On the show, she told her boyfriend that she wanted liposuction to look like a mannequin, but not Kylie. If she wants to look like Kylie and that is her deliberate plan, fine. But I can’t tell if that’s her goal or just a click bait title for an intriguing article put forth by TMZ. It’s possible the fake news strikes again!

Chrissy Teigen becomes the latest famous person to open up about getting a boob job. She joins the ranks of Kaley Cuoco, Victoria Beckham and Anna Faris. For what it’s worth, does it really matter anymore? It’s not shocking and that’s a good thing.

Chrissy Teigen and her boob job

As time passes, the news of someone getting a boob job has lost its sheen as “big news!” The truth is, it’s no longer taboo to get a boob job. This is partly due to the #metoo movement. Obviously the #metoo movement is about someone abusing their position of power in how they treat women. But in a #metoo-adjacent sense, if anyone comes off as sexist or treating a woman differently for feeling “feminine,” they’re very quickly shut down. Plus, being critical of what someone else does with their body is just ridiculous. Who cares what you think about so-and-so’s choices?!

As far as Chrissy Teigen is concerned, she got a boob job a little over a decade ago. She says that she got implants to make her breasts perkier when modeling bathing suits. Many women feel this way. They want implants simply to help fill out clothes, so they fit better.

In the article above, she appears someone despondent that she wants them out and will have to get a lift now. For what its worth, she need not feel this way. She doesn’t need a lift only because she had implants. She’s had two children and that causes breasts to become pendulous. If she ever wants perky breasts again, implant or not, she would need a lift anyway. No need to blame herself.

And in a twisted sort of way, the fact that a celebrity getting a boob job isn’t as big as deal as it once was, shows society is maturing as a whole!

It’s amazing to see how the ideal of what the butt and a woman’s shape “should” be, has evolved over time. How did we arrive at this current state of butt-obsession! Of course it’s a double standard and an objectification of women. But it’s also a pattern that has been around for years. So how did we get to this current shape of affairs?! This review, including the video below, provides some insight into the evolution of the butt in society.

The evolution of the butt

This isn’t the first time we’ve put a fuller figure on a pedestal. Peter Paul Rubens, (28 June 1577 – 30 May 1640), a Flemish painter, is well known for his voluptuous women. An overweight, full-bodied woman was all the rage in early modern history. And that’s the way it has been for centuries. “But” things change.

It was until the 90’s, the 1990’s that the idea of a petite, thin supermodel was considered “hot.” So fairly recently. And just as fast as that trend came, it went!

Whether it was the influence of hip hop and Latina culture on American pop culture, or the simple fact that it was easier to be curvy than super thin, voluptuous was back. This was specifically clear in regards to the butt. The arrival of J Lo on the scene in the early 2000’s brought fuller buttocks back into vogue.

The big butt really caught on with the Kardashians in the 2010’s. However, it wasn’t just a big butt. Interested women now wanted a narrow waist and full hips. Specifically, elimination of the hip dips (the natural sunken area between the pelvic bone above and the hip bone below) was the next step in this journey.

Now we’re seeing big round butts with round hips. Sound familiar? These trends, like so many, have come full circle. While it doesn’t include the obesity of the Rubenesque paintings in the 1500 and 1600’s, the ideal aesthetic women are requesting from their plastic surgeon is a return to this more voluptuous silhouette!

We’ve all been hearing a lot about Jessica Simpson’s memoir but now there are some juicy details regarding Jessica Simpson’s plastic surgery! She discusses having two tummy tucks back to back and some complications. We’ll try and break down her experience. Totally unsubstantiated of course!

Jessica Simpson’s plastic surgery

Based on excerpts we have read, Jessica (yes, we’re on a first name basis) was not in the best medical shape. She was on diet pills and other medications that were adversely affecting her liver. She says her doctors recommended she not have surgery but she did. It’s not clear if, after receiving an answer she didn’t want to hear from one doctor, that she simply went to another doctor.

Regardless, it sounds like she had a mini tummy tuck to remove the excess skin to her lower abdomen. This is not the same as a full tummy tuck. In fact, when she didn’t have the result she was expecting, she went back for a full tummy tuck against medical advice.

As I discuss in the video below, just because a patient insists on having a procedure, does not mean the doctor must do it. Obviously we don’t know all of the specifics but her surgeon could have refused to do the follow up procedure. However, they did perform a full tummy tuck. Even if the timing was not appropriate in Jessica’s case, this is an appropriate procedure for someone that has had children, where a mini tummy tuck would be lacking.

For example, a full tummy tuck not only removes excess lower abdominal skin, but it also tightens up the abdominal wall. This is called a rectus plication. A full tummy tuck also includes liposuction and removal of more skin than what’s possible in a mini tummy tuck.

Complications after her tummy tuck

She states she got an infection after the full tummy tuck. The part that’s confusing is that she describes the infection as colitis. This is an infection of the intestines. Typically when someone describes an infection after a tummy tuck, they’re referring to an infection along the skin incision. Why would a tummy tuck cause infection of the intestines? It’s possible she got an infection of the intestines due to the antibiotics she was taking after her surgery. How do you get an infection of the intestines if you’re already on antibiotics?

Great question, and here’s the answer. Your intestines normally have bacteria in them, referred to as good bacteria, that help with digestion and keeping you “regular.” If you are taking antibiotics, particularly for a long time (as you might after an operation), that can kill the good bacteria, resulting in an overgrowth of bad bacteria. This would lead to diarrhea and “colitis.” So maybe that’s what she’s talking about.

At the end of the day, safety first. Don’t allow your health to take a back seat to an unnecessary cosmetic procedure. Sure there are always risks, but leave the high risk procedures to an operation you must have. Don’t risk your life for an operation you don’t have to have!

This year’s Super Bowl was disappointing for many reasons. Being from Louisiana, it was disappointing the Saints weren’t in the big game. With San Francisco as my adopted home, it was also disappointing that the 49er’s lost. But what wasn’t disappointing? The appearance of J Lo and Shakira! These women are defying age. And the question on everyone’s mind is, did J Lo get plastic surgery (or Shakira for that matter)? My answer? No.

J Lo get plastic surgery? Nope!

As you can see in this Instagram post, I stated unequivocally that J Lo looks as amazing as she does through hard work, diet and exercise. And as you’ll see in the comments on that post, many people vehemently disagreed with me. Some went so far as to suggest that I wasn’t a good enough surgeon if I couldn’t make someone look like that! Or that I didn’t have enough confidence in myself to provide someone with a result as natural as J Lo’s body! They’re missing the point.

For those naysayers out there, tell me what plastic surgery you think J Lo had? Her arms are tone and buff. Did she get bicep implants? No, she worked out!

You think she had breast implants? Oh really?! J Lo got breast implants so she could have B cup, small, shapely, appropriate-for-her-body breasts? And she got them 35 years ago before anyone took a photo of her? I mean, her breasts have looked the same at least as far back as her Grammy dress from 2000!

A tummy tuck? Yes, her abdomen looks amazing after kids. So she had a tummy tuck to tighten her rectus diastasis without any evidence of a tummy scar or incision around her belly button? With her exposing her abdomen on the reg, it’s not possible to hide scars like that, that well.

This is my point. Whatever plastic surgery people think she had, there’s no physical evidence of that, other than she looks great. Honestly, I believe people want her to have had plastic surgery more than they think she actually had plastic surgery. Because if she had plastic surgery, then they could say she has money and was able to afford plastic surgery. Whereas if she has that body through hard work, diet and exercise, then we all collectively have no excuse!

Video: J Lo did NOT get plastic surgery

Finally, to reiterate, I’m not saying plastic surgery can’t make someone look amazing. Of course it can. I have patients to prove it. But in J Lo’s case, there’s no evidence of a tummy tuck scar to suggest she got that body from anything other than hard work, diet and exercise.

Keep reading to the get 411!

THE Aesthetic Show 2019

On Thursday, Dr. Kaplan will provide a live demo of neuromodulators. These are the injections of Botox or Xeomin that relax the muscles that cause facial wrinkles. In the afternoon, he’ll provide a live demo of fillers, to fill in deep facial wrinkles like the parentheses lines.

On Friday, he’ll be a guest on the Aesthetic TV Show and subsequently acting as host on Saturday. Later in the day on Friday, he’s speaking on “Improving the Patient Experience with Injectables.” He’ll discuss why injectables are such a great benefit for the practice and how the patient will benefit from great customer service and technology.

Saturday morning he’ll speak on social media and whether doctors’ offices should utilize social media influencers. And finally on Sunday, he’ll speak on his favorite topic with, “Improving the patient experience through price transparency.”

As the founder/CEO of BuildMyBod Health, price transparency is near and dear to his heart. As it should be for any physician! He’ll focus on the benefits to both the patient and the physician when it comes to price transparency. While it’s not always seen as a positive, it really is a huge customer service opportunity. If you’re in Vegas, consider attending at the Wynn! DM @aestheticshow on Instagram for details.

He doesn’t consider himself an expert but he’s in the trenches utilizing social media on the reg so he has something to offer. Continue reading to find out what!

Social media course at the CSPS Annual Meeting

The CSPS Annual Meeting is a wonderful gathering of the best and brightest of plastic surgeons in California. And with so many plastic surgeons in California active on social media, it only makes sense to have a social media course.

Because Dr. Kaplan (aka @RealDrBae on Instagram and Snapchat) is very active on social media on a daily basis, he suggested a course on the topic. Surprisingly, one had not already been scheduled. But after giving a well-received presentation on social media to the Greater Sacramento Society of Plastic Surgeons a few weeks ago, he got the opportunity to give a similar course at the CSPS this year.

While hesitant to refer to himself as an expert, his presentation reviews the nuts and bolts of social media. Through a mix of video and screenshots of the various platforms in action, Dr. Kaplan’s course will provide a great overview to the social media novice and explore some of the more engaging aspects of Instagram. Since social media is a rapidly changing space, he always has more content to add from presentation to presentation and that also means that even the most seasoned social media user can learn something new.

Course Description

The newest plastic surgeon right out of training can get busier, faster simply by being social media savvy. That means we all need a basic understanding of the power of social media. Dr. Kaplan, aka @realdrbae on Snapchat and Instagram, will give a thorough overview of the social media platforms that are transforming plastic surgery practices across the country. You don’t need to have a ton of followers to be successful. You don’t need that X factor. Anyone can do this. But you should try to be the best you can be.

By attending this course, you will: 1) gain a basic understanding and the differences between Snapchat, Instagram, Instagram Stories, Instagram TV and Facebook Live; 2) receive ideas for clever content to be used on social media; 3) become familiar with various engagement tools on Instagram; 4) learn how to create content once and then repurpose on all platforms; and 5) monetize your leads by capturing the contact information of your followers

Space in limited – don’t miss this opportunity to hear the latest trends on social media. Cost for the course is $45 and it is free to Residents/Fellows/Medical Students. Register online for the course on the CSPS registration page OR if you have already registered for the Annual Meeting, contact the CSPS Executive Office directly to add this course to your registration: cspsoffice@att.net or (510) 243-1662.

Hope to see everyone there!

Did you hear? Cardi B recently cancelled her concerts for the rest of May due to prolonged recovery from liposuction. But is it as simple as that? Dr. Kaplan of Pacific Heights Plastic Surgery (aka @realdrbae on Instagram and Snapchat) recently shared his thoughts with the morning show over at 99.7 Now, the Bay’s #1 for all the hits.

Cardi B and her liposuction

You would think that if she was planning surgery, she would have set aside some time to recover. Liposuction recovery requires one to two weeks tops. So why does she need more time to recover even after returning to work? She said her doctors told her she needed to, but really?

If you were tired and were feeling like you overextended yourself, you would choose to take time off and recover. So why did she need to ask the doctors about taking time off? The only reason to ask a doctor for more time off is so they can write you a note or excuse for your boss. Cardi B doesn’t have a supervisor! So why did she need the doctors to tell her to chill?

“Cardi B doesn’t have a supervisor!”

The most likely reason her doctors are telling her to take more time off is because she has a complication. Maybe she has an infection that needs IV antibiotics. Maybe she has a fluid collection under the skin that needs drainage. Regardless, she’ll ultimately be fine but it is awkward to have this happen when you’re a public figure.

Congratulations to Dr. Jonathan Kaplan, founder of Pacific Heights Plastic Surgery. He was recently selected as the 2019 Best Cosmetic Surgeon by Bay Area readers of SF Weekly magazine.

2019 Best Cosmetic Surgeon

This year’s ballot required readers to write in their vote rather than choose from a list of nominees. Because of Dr. Kaplan’s reputation with the patients he treats and his prevalence on social media, he received the most support. However, what’s unclear is if consumers voted for Dr. Kaplan or his social media name, Dr. Bae!

Clearly Dr. Kaplan couldn’t do this on his own. The more appropriate name for the award would be the Best Cosmetic Surgery Team, to include the office staff, rather than the best cosmetic surgeon. Because the entire team creates an atmosphere that lends itself to great customer service. Something that can’t be done alone.

In his pursuit of complete transparency, you can watch Dr. Kaplan perform surgery on Snapchat and Instagram Stories @realdrbae. Aside from getting to know Dr. Kaplan and the team on social media, it’s possible to know pricing ahead of time as well. His prices are available at www.buildmybod.com and www.realdrbae.com/pricing

We’re in a new age. The ability to know your doctor prior to the consultation has never been easier. While many people are “down” on the idea of social media, it really does provide insight into these cosmetic procedures and the physicians performing them like never before.

Choosing your doctor from social media isn’t the craziest thing you can do. Choosing a doctor based on your friend’s advice alone, without seeing them perform the surgery or without seeing their results – now that’s crazy! In fact, just because a magazine names them the best cosmetic surgeon isn’t enough. Is is possible that doctor paid for their accolade (Dr. Kaplan did not). With Dr. Kaplan, what you see is what you get!
