We’ve all seen the questions online or on social media when it comes to who is or is not a BBL candidate. Do I have enough fat for a BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift)? Do I need to gain weight? We finally have the answer! As long as you’re healthy and your doctor agrees, even a thin patient can be a BBL candidate. Just check out our 5’4″, 105 pound patient!

Who’s a BBL candidate?

Aside from being healthy, patients considering a BBL should have reasonable expectations. If they are morbidly obese, a patient should consider medical or surgical weight loss first. At the other end of the spectrum, a very thin patient can still be a candidate.

The abdomen and flanks (love handles) are the typical go-to location for fat harvesting during liposuction. But this presents a unique challenge in a thin patient. And not because they don’t have enough fat. If a patient is thin, they’re at an increase risk of contour deformities from the liposuction cannula. That’s why it’s important to use a smaller liposuction cannula during fat harvest (3 or 4mm). But where else can fat be found?

Surprisingly, there is more fat that most realize in the inner thighs and back. The inner thighs offer up some of the best, most golden brown fat there is! Due to the large dimensions of the back, even a thin layer of fat can add up. Significant liposuction to the back and waist is critical to achieving great results. While some fat will reabsorb over time, the buttocks can still appear larger because of aggressive liposuction around the waist.

So how is it really done?

How to get a rounder booty!

The best way to achieve these results is by fat injections or fat transfer into the buttocks in a procedure called a Brazilian Butt Lift or BBL. A BBL consists of two steps. The first is to remove the patient’s own fat from their abdomen, flanks and back. Doing so “snatches” the waist and already gives the appearance of a larger buttock even before any fat is transferred. In some patients who are looking for a more subtle change, that is enough. But for those who are looking for more projection like these celebrities, on to step two!

The second step is to take the fat harvested from the torso and inject that into the buttock. Fat injected into the buttock will give the projection that most people are looking for. It’s also important to add fat into the side of the buttock to ensure that the transition from butt to the hips is seamless and gives the patient an hourglass figure.

Typically, the buttocks are “overfilled” with fat. This is because some of the fat injected will not receive a proper blood supply after the transfer and will slowly die. Therefore, between surgery and the first four weeks post op, the BBL will actually get smaller. The fat cells that establish a new blood supply will survive, keeping the booty round.

What about butt implants?

Now why not use butt implants? Butt implants come with risks and complications including displacement or movement of the implants, fluid collection in the buttock and capsular contracture. And even if the implant placement is successful, the implants are not permanent. It is recommended that patients have a butt implant replacement (or removal) about 8-12 years after the initial procedure. Lastly, the results of butt implants look and feel less natural that the results of a BBL with fat.

Therefore, whether you’re looking for a round, athletic booty or a booty from one of those rap videos, a Brazilian Butt Lift is the way to go! And in the words of Jason Derulo, “You know what to do with that big, fat butt… Wiggle, wiggle!”

Even if you’re not considering a Brazilian Butt Lift, this article provides helpful postoperative insights for any procedure. But for those wondering what a Brazilian Butt Lift is, you can read more here. However, this is the short version: after performing liposuction to any area of the body, the fat that’s collected is placed back into the buttocks.

Helpful hints after a Brazilian Butt Lift or any surgery

After your surgery, the last thing you want to do is go to the pharmacy. So ask your doctor to give you a prescription to fill before your surgery date. The other option is to find a surgeon that provides the pain meds and anti-nausea meds to take home with you. This level of service is a huge patient satisfier!

Go grocery shopping before your procedure. After surgery, you won’t want to go to the grocery store to buy supplies, just like you don’t want to deal with the pharmacy. So go get necessary supplies ahead of time. Items like ready-made meals, gauze, tape and antibacterial soap. This will come in handy and reduce anxiety postoperatively.

If in fact you do get a Brazilian Butt Lift, you probably don’t want to sit on your butt. While there are no scientific studies to show that sitting on your butt negatively affects your results, it’s a reasonable assumption. For this reason, find one of those decorative pillows that looks like a log or buy a “booty pillow.” The idea is to sit on your thighs, not your butt. Just place the pillow under your thighs rather than your buttocks.
