We’re proud to announce that Dr. Kaplan, aka @realdrbae on Snapchat and Instagram, recently won an award at THE Aesthetic Show 2019!

Best Surgical Body Shaping Enhancement at THE Aesthetic Show 2019

As you can see in the video below, Dr. Kaplan performed a Mommy Makeover on a patient with amazing results. In fact, award winning results! She had a breast augmentation and lift as well as a tummy tuck.

Even though it’s a scary sounding operation, the patient when home the same day as surgery. She was a very compliant, active patient who recovered well.

There are many variations on the mommy makeover. No two patients are alike. Some need a breast lift alone, or implants alone, or implants and a lift. This all depends on how droopy the breast are and how much breast tissue the patient already has.

If they have a large amount of breast tissue, then they may only need a lift. The type of lift depends on how droopy the breast are. Minimal droop, an implant may be enough. More droop may need a donut lift, a lollipop lift or an anchor lift. Implants also help with improving breast projection even if the patient already has adequate breast tissue. This patient had a breast lift and augmentation. Check out the results below.

Over the weekend we received these photos from a patient. Aside from the fact that these are great quality before and after photos – consistent angle and lighting, having the foresight to take a ‘before’ photo to compare to her ‘after’ photo – they also point out something very important. Sometimes, it’s necessary to stage cosmetic procedures.

As these photos demonstrate, she looks great after her Mommy Makeover that included a breast augmentation and lift, back liposuction and tummy tuck. But she’s also concerned about her thighs. However, we didn’t try to address this issue in the first stage.

When it’s best to stage cosmetic procedures

There are certainly benefits to doing “everything” at once. This can consolidate a patient’s recovery. Rather than two recovery periods, there is just one. However, there are safety concerns as well.

Whenever we perform liposuction, we take about 5 liters at any one time. The concern with taking more than 5 liters at once is a severe form of dehydration termed hypovolemic shock. But even if your doctor tries to avoid taking more than 5 liters in one operation, they can remove 5 liters in each stage.

This patient had about 5 liters removed in her first stage when performing liposuction of the back and abdomen. If we tried to treat the thighs at the same time, that 5 liters would’ve been spread out over the back, abdomen and thighs, thereby taking less fat from the back and abdomen and leading to a less dramatic result.

She chose to stage these procedures. Therefore, we took 5 liters from the abdomen and back in the first stage, And plan to take another 5 liters from the thighs. While this requires two operations, it will lead to a much better result than what could be achieved in one operation.

When you’re a plastic surgeon, “cocktail conversation” at a party can involve any and all topics. How much recovery do I need after a neck lift? Can you get rid of my cankles? Breast pumping, not breastfeeding, resulted in my saggy breasts! This particular party patron made the last comment as a matter of fact. I was a little embarrassed that I didn’t “know” that pumping led to saggy breasts moreso than breastfeeding. Seems like if that was true, I would know that by now.

Is pumping a greater culprit of saggy breasts than breastfeeding?

This was not a topic in medical school. So between Google and other colleagues, this is what I found: the information online is really spotty. Most search results aren’t definitive and don’t reflect a series of studies. Rather, you find opinions on various online forums like reddit.

“Expert” opinion often takes the form of someone with an ulterior motive. The pro pumping stance comes from someone selling a breast pump. The pro breastfeeding stance from an organization selling yoga or transcendental meditation classes. Of course there are also genuine opinions from mothers but even amongst these real experts, there’s no consensus.

Taken altogether, saggy breasts are a result of pregnancy, not necessarily the technique of providing milk to the baby. There is no direct correlation of sagging being worse with breastfeeding or pumping. They certainly have their own advantages: emotional connection with a child during breastfeeding; ability to return to work with pumping.

At the end of the day, it depends on the quality of skin and ligaments in the breast. And this depends mostly on your genetic makeup and ability for your skin to recoil and tighten after pregnancy. So if you’re unhappy with saggy breasts, there are surgical and non-surgical options. The non-surgical options to tighten the skin seem to work but very temporarily. The only way to retain long-term results is with surgery but, as a surgeon, I don’t want to sound like I have an ulterior motive!

That disclosure being said, you can check pricing on cosmetic surgical and non-surgical items, in particular a mommy makeover, from Dr. Kaplan, here!

Courtesy of https://venturebeat.com/

Tax season officially culminates tomorrow, April 15th (or maybe technically April 18th this year) when you file your taxes. And let’s just assume you’re filing your taxes on time! Aside from getting past the anxiety of taxes, this is actually a great time of year. Why? Because this is the time to get that mommy makeover or aesthetic touchup that you’ve been considering.

What’s so great about tax season?

As you might imagine, tax season can also mean a tax refund. Sure you can put that money away for a rainy day or pay off some debt but who are we kidding?! As Americans we don’t feel alive unless we’re spending that money even before it lands in our pocket! So if you really don’t have more important bills or loans to tend to, cosmetic surgery is certainly a reasonable investment in yourself. My apologies if my glib perspective is not conducive to a responsible financial attitude.

In addition to having the funds to pay for a cosmetic procedure, April is a great month for cosmetic improvements. Pretty much any cosmetic surgery to the breasts, abdomen or booty are well healed within about 6 weeks. That doesn’t mean you can’t go back to work for 6 weeks. You can return to your normal routine within days or a couple weeks depending on your comfort level. I’m referring to 6 weeks since that’s about how long it takes for the incisions to heal well enough that they can be submerged in water.

Why water? Because 6 weeks after the month of April is summer time! In other words, getting a procedure in April will allow you to be healed in time for vacation. So now you have the motivation and the money in April, right after tax season. What are you going to do?
