The term Mommy Makeover is thrown around quite a bit amongst plastic surgeons and patients considering the procedure. But what is it? At its most basic meaning, a Mommy Makeover is a procedure to the breasts and abdomen to give a woman back her pre-pregnancy body. But there are several variations as you will see below.

Types of Mommy Makeover

In our practice, a Mommy Makeover can include a breast procedure (a lift, an augmentation or both), a tummy tuck, but also some other procedures. With pregnancy, the labia minora can stretch and cause discomfort during sex. Or possibly the labia can appear too bulky in underwear or bikini bottoms. For this reason, there are Mommy Makeover procedures that also include a labiaplasty.

With weight gain and loss during pregnancy and afterwards, the buttocks can become deflated like the breasts. That’s why we offer a Brazilian Butt Lift with some Mommy Makeover procedures. The benefit of performing these procedures in combination is that it leads to one recovery instead of multiple recoveries.

Mommy Makeover

As stated above, this procedure includes a breast lift, aug or both along with a tummy tuck. To help the patient understand all of their options when it comes to the breast procedure, we’ve divided every Mommy Makeover into type 1, 2 and 3.

Type 1 refers to a breast lift only. This is necessary when the patient has pendulous, droopy breasts after breast feeding. But they have enough breast tissue so that an implant isn’t necessary. Type 2 refers to a breast augmentation alone. This is necessary when a patient has deflated breasts and needs more volume, as with an implant. And type 3 is a combination of the two – when a patient has droopy and deflated breasts. A lift will improve the shape of the breast and an implant will restore volume.

As you’ll see below, type 1, 2 and 3 can be applied to all three kinds of Mommy Makeover that we offer in our practice.

Mommy Makeover Plus

This is a breast procedure (type 1, 2 or 3), a tummy tuck and a labiaplasty.

Mommy Makeover Deluxe

This includes type 1, 2 or 3 breast procedure as above, a tummy tuck and then a Brazilian Butt Lift to restore volume and lift to the buttocks. A Brazilian Butt Lift is the liposuction of all available fat from the torso with subsequent injection into the buttocks. Check out the video below for more details!

Anyone that’s had a child (one or multiple) is familiar with the upper abdominal bulge after pregnancy. This may resolve a few months after pregnancy or it may remain. That bulge is due to three things and therefore, requires three procedures done at the same time to address all of them.

Abdominal bulge after pregnancy

The upper abdominal bulge, shown above, that occurs after pregnancy is very typical. It’s a combination of fat, excess skin and a stretched-out abdominal wall (aka rectus diastasis). Exercise alone won’t fix all three of these. Liposuction alone won’t either. But a combination of procedures is just what the doctor ordered!

During a tummy tuck, your surgeon makes an incision below your panty line. So even though it’s a long incision, it can be hidden by underwear or bikini bottoms. After the incision is made, your surgeon will perform liposuction to the abdomen and flanks but also to the upper abdomen if there is excess fat there.

However that bulge is also due to excess skin that hasn’t tightened or recoiled after the pregnancy and due to a rectus diastasis. A rectus diastasis is not the same thing as a hernia. It’s when the six pack muscles and the tough tissue (fascia) that wraps around them, separate. This leaves a weakened abdominal wall that bulges out in the middle of the abdomen.

To bring the six pack muscles back together in the middle where they should be, requires a rectus plication. This is the use of stitches, like a corset, to bring the muscles back together and remove the bulge. Working out in the gym may strengthen your six pack muscles but it won’t remove the bulge. That’s why you need a 1) tummy tuck with 2) liposuction and a 3) rectus plication to remove excess fat, skin and flatten the abdominal wall to finally get rid of that bulge after pregnancy.

We’re proud to announce that Dr. Kaplan, aka @realdrbae on Snapchat and Instagram, recently won an award at THE Aesthetic Show 2019!

Best Surgical Body Shaping Enhancement at THE Aesthetic Show 2019

As you can see in the video below, Dr. Kaplan performed a Mommy Makeover on a patient with amazing results. In fact, award winning results! She had a breast augmentation and lift as well as a tummy tuck.

Even though it’s a scary sounding operation, the patient when home the same day as surgery. She was a very compliant, active patient who recovered well.

There are many variations on the mommy makeover. No two patients are alike. Some need a breast lift alone, or implants alone, or implants and a lift. This all depends on how droopy the breast are and how much breast tissue the patient already has.

If they have a large amount of breast tissue, then they may only need a lift. The type of lift depends on how droopy the breast are. Minimal droop, an implant may be enough. More droop may need a donut lift, a lollipop lift or an anchor lift. Implants also help with improving breast projection even if the patient already has adequate breast tissue. This patient had a breast lift and augmentation. Check out the results below.

Over the weekend we received these photos from a patient. Aside from the fact that these are great quality before and after photos – consistent angle and lighting, having the foresight to take a ‘before’ photo to compare to her ‘after’ photo – they also point out something very important. Sometimes, it’s necessary to stage cosmetic procedures.

As these photos demonstrate, she looks great after her Mommy Makeover that included a breast augmentation and lift, back liposuction and tummy tuck. But she’s also concerned about her thighs. However, we didn’t try to address this issue in the first stage.

When it’s best to stage cosmetic procedures

There are certainly benefits to doing “everything” at once. This can consolidate a patient’s recovery. Rather than two recovery periods, there is just one. However, there are safety concerns as well.

Whenever we perform liposuction, we take about 5 liters at any one time. The concern with taking more than 5 liters at once is a severe form of dehydration termed hypovolemic shock. But even if your doctor tries to avoid taking more than 5 liters in one operation, they can remove 5 liters in each stage.

This patient had about 5 liters removed in her first stage when performing liposuction of the back and abdomen. If we tried to treat the thighs at the same time, that 5 liters would’ve been spread out over the back, abdomen and thighs, thereby taking less fat from the back and abdomen and leading to a less dramatic result.

She chose to stage these procedures. Therefore, we took 5 liters from the abdomen and back in the first stage, And plan to take another 5 liters from the thighs. While this requires two operations, it will lead to a much better result than what could be achieved in one operation.

A Mommy Makeover is just a fancy name for a combined procedure that consists of a breast augmentation and/or mastopexy (breast lift), along with liposuction and a tummy tuck. What? It sounds like a lot, but this combination is quite common for women who want to fix deflated breasts and get rid of excess, hanging skin in their abdomen. It is an outpatient procedure and depending on your size, will take approximately 6-8 hours.

The details in a mommy makeover

The breast augmentation portion of the procedure typically consists of a small incision either in the inframammary fold, around the areola or in the armpit. There are pros and cons for each choice, but the choice is yours depending on your case and what type of incision that you want to live with after surgery.

A gummy bear silicone implant is then inserted to give the perkiness patients desire. They can also choose between shaped or round implants depending on the look they’re going for. In some cases when there is excess droop in the breasts, a lift may be necessary. Depending on how much lift is required, it is performed with an anchor, lollipop areolar (donut) or crescent incisions.

The tummy tuck part of the procedure begins with liposuction of the abdomen and flanks. This extra step can really maximize the results of the tummy tuck. Then, a long incision across the abdomen is made, just below the panty line. The skin is elevated towards the breastbone and then the excess skin is removed. If the patient has any rectus diastasis or abdominal separation that typically results from multiple pregnancies, this is corrected by rectus plication wherein sutures are used to pull the muscles back together. Lastly, in an ideal case, progressive retention sutures are used so that drains are not required.

And wham bam, thank you ma’am, you’re all done! Checkout this video below and to check pricing on a mommy makeover from Dr. Kaplan, click here.

Oh, and for the ladies out there who haven’t had kids – if this combination surgery sounds like what you are looking for, don’t be shy in asking for the Mommy Makeover! Andon’t let the name scare you away; it’s just a name. Getting the combined procedure not only gives you one recovery period, but doing so will also save you money compared to going under for two separate procedures.
