Amongst a lot of other information, the video below will help shed some light on the question, “can you die from breast implants.” In addition to that topic, the video from board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jonathan Kaplan will review the differences between various types of implants. Read a brief overview below and then watch the video for a more in depth discussion.

Saline vs Silicone vs Ideal Implant

Whether it’s saline vs silicone vs a newer type of implant called the Ideal Implant, all implants are made of a silicone shell. So if you’re nervous about silicone and risks like lupus, you can never truly get away from the silicone if you decide you want implants.

Many feel that saline is too much like a balloon. Not very natural feeling. Most would agree that silicone feels more natural. The Ideal Implant has many silicone shells inside the implant to make it feel more natural, and yet it contains saline.

Round vs Shaped

Round implants give a more buxom, fuller appearance. Shaped or tear drop implants give a more natural appearance without the fullness in the upper portion of the breast. Not everyone is a candidate for a shaped implant if they have too much breast tissue to begin with.

Round implants can be smooth whereas shaped implants have texture. The texture helps keep the implant in its proper position. More on texturing in the next section.

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) and breast implant associated illness (BIAI)

A risk specific to texturing (most commonly found in shaped implants), is a type of lymphoma called anaplastic large cell lymphoma. ALCL isn’t really a cancer but if left without treatment, this type of lymphoma can result in death. But very, very rarely. The current belief is that ALCL arises from the scar tissue that naturally forms around all breast implants – even saline implants. That scar tissue can cause capsular contracture which is thick scar tissue that can cause pain or distort the appearance of the breast.

And in very rare cases, the scar tissue can develop into a lymphoma that will cause a sudden fluid collection around the implants. Your doctor can send the fluid to the lab to make a diagnosis. As long as the scar tissue is removed, the patient can expect to make a 100% recovery and death should not be the end result.

Lastly, in the video, there’s the discussion on breast implant associated illness. This is when patients who have implants have many specific or non-specific symptoms like malaise and lethargy. Unfortunately, there is not an easy way to diagnose this illness or what symptoms are part of BIAI. The FDA is still collecting information on this subject.

In the meantime, watch the video below.

For those of you out there considering a breast augmentation, you have another choice on the market. No longer can you only choose between silicone or saline. Now you have the option of a saline, structured implant – the IDEAL implant!

How is the IDEAL implant different?

As you’ll see in the video below, the IDEAL implant isn’t just another saline implant. It has “structure” to it. In this case, it means that in addition to a silicone shell, there are additional silicone shells inside that give the saline implant a feel closer to a silicone implant. Even though there are multiple silicone shells, there is no silicone liquid or gel inside.

While the 5th generation silicone implants are more like gels and less likely to leak like the original silicone implants, some patients have concerns. So if you’re worried about silicone gel implants, also called gummy bear implants, you have another option.

The concerns about silicone implants – risk of lupus or cancer – are not substantiated in many studies. And the recent concern about ALCL is associated with implants that have a textured surface. Most silicone implants do not have a texture on their surface and neither does the IDEAL implant. In the end, if you still have concerns about a silicone implant but still want the natural feel of a silicone implant, the IDEAL implant is for you!

Here’s the list you’ve been waiting for! Five myths that many believe about breast augmentation, fed by bad info on the internet. The post below will help you wade through that information so you can make a better decision for yourself.

1. After I have a breast aug, I can no longer breastfeed

Not true! Regardless of what incision is used, even the incision around the areola, breast augmentation does not affect breast feeding. Keep in mind that not all women can breast feed in the first place. So if you can’t breast feed before a breast augmentation, you obviously wouldn’t be able to afterwards.

Many people describe the incision around the areola as “going through the nipple.” This also isn’t true (bonus myth debunked)! The incision is never made within the nipple so you don’t have to worry about breast feeding issues just because of breast augmentation.

2. I need to have the implants replaced after 10 years

This is based on this statement from the FDA. While 20% of breast augmentation patients do have issues with their breasts after 10 years (capsular contracture, leak, ptosis), that also means 80% of patients are fine. So you don’t have to get them replaced after 10 years. It’s only if you have a problem.

3. I will lose feeling in my nipples and surrounding areas

Again, the “incision through the nipple” is actually along the edge of the surrounding areola. While you may have a little numbness along the incision itself temporarily, you don’t lose feeling in the nipple.

Losing nipple sensation can occur if the entire nipple and areola must be removed but this only happens during very large breast reductions, not augmentations. This can also occur with certain types of breast reconstruction after cancer. So these myths can be true in completely different situations but not breast augmentation.

4. My breasts will look and feel fake

They don’t have to. If you get round implants, the upper portion of the breast can look fuller which is not natural. But if you don’t get huge implants, you can still look very natural. Shaped implants also help with providing a more natural shape. Lastly, with the newer generation silicone implants, they feel more natural, look more natural, not hard and fake, like older implants.

5. Recovery is painful and will need drains

With a straightforward breast augmentation, your breast augmentation procedure should not require drains. They may be used in revision breast augmentation procedures or breast reductions. Again, many myths come about when readers conflate issues with one type of operation with another.
