Dr. Kaplan’s presentation is entitled, “Improve the Patient Experience With Price Transparency.” In the talk, Dr. Kaplan, a board certified plastic surgeon, will explain how he and doctors across the country use price transparency to reduce sticker shock when it comes to out-of-pocket costs for medically necessary or cosmetic services, and thus improve the patient experience.

Think about it. Whether it’s an insurance-based or cosmetic procedure, most patients have to pay out of pocket for a portion of their healthcare. In the case of medically necessary services, the patient must cover their deductible before the insurance company kicks in. For cosmetic procedures, insurance doesn’t cover it so the consumer has to pay the whole fee out of pocket. Well, when the patient comes in for their consultation and finds out about the cost, they’ll experience sticker shock if they had no appreciation of their financial obligations ahead of time.

That’s how a Price Estimator helps. The consumer can check pricing online through their doctor/facility’s website ahead of time. That way, when they arrive for their appointment, they have a good understanding of the costs and voila, no sticker shock!

Want better Yelp or other online reviews? Don’t shock your patient! When it comes to non-emergent situations, it’s reasonable for the patient to expect a good-faith estimate ahead of time.
