Weight loss medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound are notoriously hard to get. So patients are resorting to compounded versions of the active ingredients found in Ozempic and Mounjaro, semaglutide and tirzepatide, respectively.

But we wanted to know – are they requesting the compounded versions because their provider won’t write a prescription for the name brand, ie you should try diet and exercise first! Or will they write a prescription but insurance won’t cover the medication and patients don’t want to pay over a $1000 per month for name brand (compounded versions are typically in the $400 – $600 range). Or will insurance cover it but traditional pharmacies are backordered and can’t get the medication for patients. Or is it another reason entirely.

We surveyed our patients currently being treated in our office with the compounded versions of these weight loss medications and the graph below tells the story!
