Options in Lip Augmentation

lip augmentationConsidering lip augmentation? Now that Kylie Jenner has popularized this trend, let’s talk about your options. You have permanent silicone lip implants and fillers on the market along with fat injections.

Lip augmentation: Fillers, lip implants and fat

As seen in this photo to the left, lip implants are a great option. While these are performed under local anesthesia with silicone implants, they’re not the same as silicone breast implants. Silicone lip implants are soft but solid, not a liquid or gel. They can be placed into the upper and lower lips and come in different sizes.

Secondly, and most commonly is lip augmentation with fillers like Belotero and Juvederm. This can be very easy to do when done by an appropriately trained plastic surgeon or dermatologist. The major benefit is that fillers can be taken “off the shelf,” no need for major surgery to get fat and no implantation of a silicone implant. This is the major downside of fillers because they’re very temporary, only lasting 6 months to a year at the most.

Lastly, you have lip augmentation with your own fat. Fat can be taken from the abdomen, purified and then placed into the lips. While this requires more effort than filler and implants, this technique gives the most natural, voluptuous results in my opinion.

No matter which technique you settle on, don’t overdo it. There’s no excuse for duck lips! The purpose of most cosmetic procedures is to restore self-confidence and a youthful, rested appearance. The best cosmetic surgery is “invisible” wherein your friends and family don’t know you had anything done. They just think you look relaxed, healthy and at the top of your game. So keep it real!
