Fillers for your cheeks…and not the crease!

fillersAs a recent NY Times article discussed, the school of thought regarding placement of fillers has changed over the last several years. In the past, fillers (gel injections) would plump up the lip and wrinkles to give a more youthful look. The purpose, to strive for the fountain of youth, hasn’t changed, but how we get there has.

For example, if you have a crease extending from the nose to the corners of the mouth, referred to as parentheses lines, you would inject the filler into those lines. That still works, but now you can kill two birds with one stone! By injecting fillers into the “apple” of your upper cheek, this volumizes the upper cheeks and pulls the lower portions of the face with it. As you lift the face upwards, those parentheses lines begin to disappear. So instead of only treating the parentheses lines, you also have higher, more attractive cheek bones.

Again, there’s nothing wrong with treating the crease or wrinkle directly, but in a way, you’re restoring your youthfulness in a more natural way by treating the cheek. Think of the natural progression of aging: your parentheses lines don’t just get deeper. They’re deeper because the upper face loses volume. As your upper face loses volume, the cheeks start to sag and hang over the parentheses lines making them look deeper. So just injecting the line is treating the symptom, not the underlying cause.

Cheek injections with Juvederm Voluma (FDA approved) or Radiesse restores the natural volume to the upper cheeks that you had in your youth. And with that volume, the cheeks no longer hang over the parentheses lines and voila, you look 10 years younger!
